Our Chief Executive and Clearstar’s Evolution
Stephen Berman founded Clearstar Coatings in 1996. But Steve is not new to the coatings industry. Steve was President of Chromatic Paint Corporation prior to its sale in 1991. At that time Chromatic was the largest U.S. manufacturer of coatings to the outdoor advertising industry.
In 1982, when the billboard industry was still painting with traditional enamel paints and vinyl was just being introduced, Steve invented Ti-Cote®, the first primer-barrier coat for vinyl. The billboard industry needed a way to apply oil-based enamels to vinyl. Steve’s new coating, a water-based primer, did just that. Steve set the stage for the commercial introduction of flexible vinyl scrim substrate to the outdoor advertising and sign industries. Today most billboards and thousands of signs and banners are printed on these same vinyl substrates.
In 1996, Steve established Clearstar with a vision to produce a new generation of coatings for the rapidly changing graphic arts industry. Today, Clearstar’s coatings create, protect and enhance digitally printed images and signage worldwide.
In 2007 Marabu acquired the assets of Clearstar Coatings and formed Clearstar LP. Marabu is a leading global manufacturer of Screen, Digital, and Pad Printing Inks with headquarters near Stuttgart, Germany. Its strong reputation for technical service, customer training, and environmental awareness are unsurpassed. Marabu has been ISO 9001 certified since 1995 and ISO 14001 since 2003. Clearstar LP is now the US base and service arm for MaraJet, Marabu’s line of digital printing inks.
